Chaos was the primordial deity of the nothingness that surrounds the earth.


Chaos was the personification of the lower atmosphere that surrounded the earth.


According to Hesiod, Chaos was the first being to emerge after the creation of the universe. She was followed by Gaea, Tartarus, and Eros. Hesiod also stated that Chaos was not only a personified deity but also a place.

According to Ovid, Chaos was an unformed mass where all the elements were together in a "shapeless heap".
